Tanked Tiger - 2007

Tigers are native to Asia. Deforestation and farming have diminished their hunting grounds. Indonesia boasts some 400 tigers on Sumatra and Russia’s Siberian tigers are estimated to number over 300. The feline predator hasn’t so lucky in other lands. Cambodia is down to thirty with poachers.

Thailand’s tiger population has been bolstered by the Tiger Zoo in Sri Racha, although this small reserve has allegedly sold animal parts to the Chinese, who are mad for the medicinal properties of the great cat’s bones and organs. Most notably as bone wine or tiger penis parts to improve sexual performance. Their lives in captivity are a pale shadow of their existence in the jungles. Experts have estimated that 250-300 tigers live in the wild forests of Thailand.

My wife and daughter Angie and their family lived in Thailand on the edge of the Western Forest. Very Ban Nok, which is Thai for 'the sticks'.At night the old men drink lao whiskey around a fire. The women watch Thai soap operas. We tell stories. I asked, if any of them had seen a tiger. They pointed to the distant mountains on the Burma border.

“Tigers gone here. Mountain have tiger.” My fiftyish brother-in-law had hunted for mushrooms in the jungles in the last century. His father and his neighbors had cleared the forests to create the rice paddies surrounding their farms

“You see one?”

“No one see tiger. Tiger see man. Eat man.” Noy shivered with fear. The only paths in the jungle are those made by wild elephants and no trails lead to the top of mountains.

“I hear tiger once. In Indonesia.” I had been staying in a small village on the West Coast south of Banda Aceh. “I heard a roar.”

I mimicked the low echoing growl.

The pi dogs in the yard started barking with alarm.

My daughter ran into the house.

“Good tiger.” My brother-in-law loved my act.

“The tiger scared me too and it was loud. I heard it in my bones.”

“Tiger big spirit.”

“The people in the village were frightened white. They wore masks on the back of their heads.”

“Tiger like to attack from behind.”

“Same as people.”

“Not same Thai.”

“That’s because you smile before a fight.”

“Land of Smiles. Chai yo”

We downed the rice whiskey from a plastic bag. Never a bottle. The fiery brew burned our throats. The dogs stopped barking and the insects resumed their buzzing. The only growl was my stomach grumbling from the bootleg liquor. It was much more dangerous than a tiger. The Big Cats only ate your body. Lao Khao, the bootleg liquor, ate your soul.

The foto is from Noong Nooch Gardens in Pattaya. The tiger is drugged with morphine. He only gets angry when he’s waiting for his man ala the Velvet Underground.

Same as any junkie.

Les Bains Douches - Paris August 17, 1994 - Journal

Les Bains Douches Paris August

Here's a poem from a 1994 journal Les Bains Douches Paris August 17, 1994

The clock over the stairs
Les Bains-Douches
Always Three to Midnight
The music from the dance floor
From DJ Albert
So what - Miles Davis trumpet ballad___
Upstairs in the dining room
A trio of St. Tropez blondes at a table
Blonde bronzed seeking rich men
Or young boys
I'm neither__
I sit at the bar
Alone
An old junkie friend sits
Whines a tale of need
In broken English
In my good ear___
Me
Wondering what I'm doing here
An easy answer
Candida left me
For an Italian agent
Why am I here?
I think
Maybe she'll come here__
Idiot___
I wait and wait and wait___
The blonde bartende from Toulouse
Corinne
Tres mignon, gives me drinks
Free drinks
Normally 120 new francs
$22 US
Two ice cubes
Corinne makes mine
Doubles
Plein des glacons
Her smile
So sweet
I can read her mind
I wish I could grant her wish
All I have to say is yes___
Better not
No one wants to cure a broken heart
I get up to go
My hotel in le Marais
Rue des Ecouffes
Not far away___
In walks Suzi
The Happiest Girl in Town
A friend
From last year
Swiss
Ex-model
Courtesan a les tres riches
Greyhound thin
Lips sweetest cherries__
Unseen
A mole high on her upper thigh
Her smile
An allure of lust
To any man willing to be a victim___
She sees me
I see her
Suzi kisses my cheeks
Not my lips
I tell her, "You haven't changed."
Her laugh
Mocking
"I hear that all the time. Even from the mirror."
About to ask
Come back to my hotel
In the Marais
Reading my mind
She says, "Je suis lesbian maintenant."
And joins the blonde St. Tropez trio___
It's late
It was late 2 hours ago
Corrine sad to see me go
I leave the Bains-Douches
Under the clock
Always three to midnight
My feet weak from drink
Walking into the night
Singing the old Jaynettes song
"Saddest thing in the whole wide world to see your baby with another girl."
But Suzi was never my girl
Neither was Candida.
Alone
Walking
To a hotel in Le Marais
To sleep alone___
Sleep
No dreams
Thankfully in the morning
A knock in the door
"Entrez."
Not Suzi
Mdme. Gruntuch
The owner of le Hotel Des Ecouffes
She spent the entire Nazi occupation
In the sous-sol
Four years
This morning
Le petit-dejuener
Baguette and cafe
Mdme. Gruntuch
A smile
I am not alone
Pas de tout Seul
Je suis
Avec Madame
Ah, Paris___
